ONE - SKILLET ITALIAN SAUSAGE PASTA

ONE - SKILLET ITALIAN SAUSAGE PASTA

3/4       lb. Italian pork sausage
1 - 1/4  cup water
1          14.5 oz can diced tomato with basil, garlic, and oregano, undrained
1          8 - oz can tomato sauce
8 - oz. package penne pasta, uncooked (or your favorite pasta)
1/4       cup grated Parmesan cheese

Heat a large skillet over medium high heat.  Add the sausage and cook for about 5 minutes breaking it apart with a spoon to crumble. Drain and return to the skillet, if necessary. (I didn't need to.)

Add water, tomatoes, tomato sauce, and pasta to skillet.

Stir to combine. Bring to a boil; cover; and reduce the heat and cook 15 more minutes or til pasta is tender.  (I stirred the mixture twice while it was cooking.)

Sprinkle with the Parmesan cheese.

Serve with additional cheese, if desired.

Confession time: I didn't have enough penne pasta and I took two packages of Suddenly Salad and weighed out 8 - oz of the pasta. I also didn't have the diced tomatoes the recipe called for. Mine were unseasoned.  I decided to add a little minced garlic, some basil and oregano before I covered the pan and cooked it. It all worked but next time I will try to use the called for ingredients. I also found the recipe at Alexia Foods.

  1. Hi Patricia,
    Again Rina, from Catania.
The pasta you used in your recipe isn't penne we call them Fusilli. I always use unseasoned diced tomatoes and then I add all the spices I like most. You did a good job and it looks so yummy!
    Greetings, Rina.

  2. Hi Rina,

As I said I didn't have enough penne pasta and used the pasta in the Suddenly Salad. I was intrigued by your Fusilli and had to do some research. The Suddenly Salad box doesn't identify the name of their pasta. Until your comment, I just thought of it as rotini. In my research it seems there is confusion over fusilli and rotini. Thank you for introducing me to a new term and classification for pasta. I will have to see if we have any fusilli here in the USA. Good to hear from you!

  4. Hi Patricia,
Since we have lot of brands of pasta, some of them call the fusilli also rotini.
    You were right!

    1. Hi Rina,
I'm excited to share with you what happened to me today. My husband and I went to Aldi's, a German supermarket chain we have in the USA. We like to shop there because of the products they sell and their prices. I was checking out the pasta they were selling when I saw fusilli. They also had rotini that I was already familiar with. I bought a package of the fusilli to try it. It is thicker pasta than the rotini and so didn't look as tightly twisted. I also saw a different looking pasta called Armoniche. Are you familiar with it? It was really an interesting looking pasta. I didn't buy it though. I'm so glad you told me about this new Italian pasta. Will let you know how it turns out. Thanks again. Hope it is still sunny for you. We are currently enjoying beautiful weather for October.
