ST. JOHN'S, ANTIGUA

One hundred eighty-nine and seven tenths miles away from St. Thomas, USVI, we docked in St. John's, Antigua at 8:00 AM Saturday morning, February 17.

One thing I can say about our cruise is we did plenty of walking. Not just on the ship, but on just about every island we docked. After two days in a row of walking around San Juan, Puerto Rico and St. Thomas, USVI, we decided to splurge on a guided taxi tour of Antigua. Best money we could have spent. Our driver/guide "Beef" (Colin) was the best ever. He drove us all around (about 4 hrs) showing us the island. He told us Antigua consisted of one city, St. John's, and five villages and he took us to all of them.

Highlights were our tour were Devil's BridgeNelson's Dockyard National Park, and Shirley's Heights.

I hope you enjoy my (many) pictures I took along the way.

A once operative sugar cane factory. Sugar cane is no longer processed on the island because they couldn't compete with other sugar cane operations in other, larger countries.

A soccer (football) stadium...

Devil's Bridge...

To prove we were there...

Leaving the Devil's Bridge...

A roadside market in one of the villages...

Black pineapples (center of the picture) are really not black and are sweeter than normal pineapple...

On our way to Shirley's Heights Military Complex and the most southerly tip of Antigua...Views from and of the Block House...

This is a home of Eric Clapton that is near the end of the peninsula that you can see in the above picture. Beef told us Eric has a drug rehab clinic on the island...

The sailboats were practicing for the Antigua Classic Regatta Race in April...

 Officers' Quarters...

Guard House...

English Harbor... View looking down from behind the Guard House...

Locals selling their goods...(behind the Guard House)

A banana plant (called a fig plant in Antigua) and sugar cane together in a yard...

A colorful daycare center...

An example of the colorful houses on Antigua...

St. Barnabas Anglican Church...(The island has many, many churches for many denominations.)

You have to look closely at the next picture, but the stone structure at the end of the road in the center of the picture was once a sugar cane incinerator.

Some more colorful houses...

One of the island's beaches...

The tower on the mountain, known as Boggy Peak, in the center of the picture is the highest point on the island...

Field of pineapples...

Another beautiful beach...

And all too soon (it was a quick 4 - hour tour) we were back in St. John's and back to our ship. We left the port at 5 PM with one last look at the colorful West Indies...
