Friend Barb treated the group to two desserts when we met at her house recently for a fun afternoon of Farkle. One of the desserts was her Scandinavian-Almond Cake she served us before that I shared with you .  It is the best!

When I went in the kitchen to get some, I saw that she had another dessert for us to choose from. I think we all took a little of each. Believe me you would have, too. They were both so delicious.

1-1/2      cups sugar
2            eggs
1             teaspoon vanilla
1/2         cup shortening
2            cups flour
1-1/2      teaspoon baking soda
1/2         teaspoon salt
2            tablespoons cocoa
2            cups unsweetened applesauce
1             12- ounce package of milk chocolate chips (2 cups)
1/2         cup chopped nuts
2            tablespoon sugar

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a 9 x 13 - inch baking pan.

Cream together the sugar, eggs, vanilla, and shortening.

Sift the flour, soda, salt, and cocoa together.

Add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture alternately with 2 cups of unsweetened applesauce.

Pour mixture in pan. Top with mixture of chocolate chips, nuts, and sugar.

Bake for 35 minutes.
